De Oost / The East

Vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt de jonge soldaat Johan uitgezonden om orde op zaken te stellen in Nederlands-Indië. Een stel oproerkraaiers (onder leiding van Soekarno) heeft kort daarvoor de onafhankelijkheid uitgeroepen en de Nederlandse regering wil vrijheid voor de Indonesiërs zo snel mogelijk de kop in drukken. Johan stort zich vol geldingsdrang in dit avontuur op een vreemd continent. Gaandeweg raakt hij in de ban van de charismatische legerkapitein De Turk, een personage voor wie de historische kapitein Raymond Westerling model heeft gestaan. Wanneer de oorlog escaleert en De Turk het verzet van de bevolking steeds genadelozer neerslaat, begint Johan sterk te twijfelen aan De Turk én aan zijn eigen idealen. Johan besluit voor zichzelf te kiezen, met ingrijpende gevolgen.

Naast boek en film is eveneens de verdiepende website De wereld van De Oost gelanceerd. Vijf karakters uit het verhaal van De Oost bieden een ingang naar verhalen en gebeurtenissen uit de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog. De website biedt meerdere perspectieven en bevat bronmateriaal en werkvormen.

In May 2021, the movie De Oost / The East embarked on Amazon Prime. As soon as corona allows, it will be circulated in limited movie theaters in NL. The movie is directed by the prize winning director Jim Taihuttu, known from earlier movies as Wolf and Rabat. On the same day the educational website De wereld van De Oost was launched. Five characters from the movie offer a multiperspective access to stories and historical events from the Indoensian War of Independance. The website offers in-depth sourced information and educational working methods.

At the same time, the novel De Oost was published. Film and book go along with the young Dutch soldier Johan de Vries, who voluntarily joins the so called liberation mission of the Dutch army in the former Dutch-Indies in 1946. Johan joins the special forces, commanded by the Dutch captain Westerling. Shortly after Johan starts participating in violent actions, his growing doubts about the moral justification of the violence forces him to chose. Eventually his choice confronts him with the ultimate consequence.

Like film and platform, the book is based on extensive research. The historical novel was based on the film script and enriched with historical details and near-to real quotations. The novel aims at all ages but is especially made accesible for younger generations.

De historische roman De Oost is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige publieksfilm van regisseur Jim Taihuttu (Rabat, Wolf, Gouden Kalf). Vanaf 13 mei 2021 op Amazon Prime. Een pageturner over een inktzwarte periode in onze geschiedenis.
